Steelers comeback clinches DABA cup
On Sunday evening the Steelers faced the league leading Seahawks in the DABA Cup Final. The Steelers have a history of performing well in the Cup competition, reaching the final every year for the last 4 seasons.
The first quarter proved to be a close one throughout; the highlight perhaps being two 3 point efforts in the final minutes from Steelers point guard James Brough. This momentum did not carry over into the second period however as the Seahawks raced away to a 49-38 half time lead on the back of some strong shooting from former England Junior player George Colwill.
The Seahawks pulled away futher at the beginning of the third quarter, stretching their lead to 20 points but the Steelers regrouped as Tomas Tolisius and Jason Milner began to find their shooting touch, along with the introduction of Joe Brough who quickly piled in 6 points at pivotal moments. Heading into the final period behind by a score of 72-59 against an experienced team it did not look good for the Scunthorpe side, as is often the case however they were able to turn stifling defense into free-flowing offense and a barrage of 3 point shooting from Tolisius, Robin Hewson and Nana Jumah narrowed the gap to 1 with a minute remaining in the game. Jumah then attacked the hoop at pace and finished excellently with his left hand to give the Steelers their first lead of the game with only 45 seconds remaining.
Rataj of the Seahawks would then be fouled and shoot two free throws with a chance to regain the lead, he made his first but missed the second and Tolisius came down with the rebound only to be fouled himself by Seahawks big man Robert Zajk. Zajk reacted badly to the decision and was issued with a technical foul for his remonstration with the match officials and members of the Steelers team. This would send Tolisius to the free throw line to shoot 4 shots with 25 seconds left, as a result of the technical foul the Steelers would also retain possession after the shots. Tomas Tolisius kept his cool to convert all 4 free throws and propel the Steelers to an incredible 91-86 victory, taking home the Jason Shakespeare Memorial Trophy as the DABA Cup Winners 2013.
2012/13 Season Preview
It's been a relatively quiet summer for the Steelers, we almost managed to defend our Sheffield Summer League crown but were dethroned in the final by an excellent team made up of high level national league stars.
On a more positive note we are happy to welcome back Nana Jumah to the squad who left us to attend university in Leeds several years ago. Nana has now graduated and the 6'6 forward has returned to Scunthorpe and is looking forward to representing the Steelers again in the Doncaster league. Having been with the club on and off since the age of 17 we are delighted to have him back with us for this season and as well as his on court presence he is a great role model for the Junior Steelers.
We're also extremely excited to welcome two young players to our first team squad, Matty Lindley and Matty Abbott who both put in excellent work over the last few months with our Summer League team. They both join us initially as reserve options and will be called up to replace players who may be unavailable for fixtures throughout the season. We are extremely grateful to have these hard working young guys to call upon and it really shows the depth of basketball talent available to us. Look out for follow up articles with more information about all three new players.
